2008 NAB Challenge back in Narrandera

The Narrandera Sportsground will again be the venue for a NAB AFL Challenge Game.

The game between Sydney Swans (2007 combatants) and Richmond Tigers should produce a memorable match to celebrate the 150th Year of Australian Football.

Officials are hoping for a record AFL crowd to improve on the 2007 official crowd of 10,979 where Sydney defeated Collingwood. The unofficial ground record is 12,500.

Admission will be as follows;

Tickets are
$14 for adults,
$8 for students and pensioners,
$2 for children under 15 or
$28 for a family of two adults and two children.
There are also a limited number of Grandstand Tickets available at $5.00ea approx 300

Rennie Football Ground 2007

The Final Coreen & District Football Netball Grandfinal was held yesterday 15th Sptember 2007 bringing to a close 98 years of celebrated history.

Yesterdays last grandfinal attracted around 4,000 fans who unfortunately had to witness an extremely one sided match. Coreen-Daysdale-Hopefield-Buraja United Saints 24.19 (163) destroyed Billabong (Urana-Oaklands) Crows 8.2 (50). The game was all over at the end of the first quarter with CDHBU holding a 50 point lead 7.9 (51) to 0.1. (1). The Crows scored the first two goals of the second quarter but that was about the closest they got for the remainder of the game.

Thankfully there was still around 3,000 people at the end of the game to say goodbye.

2008.... Wahgunyah Tigers are off to the Tallangatta & District Football League, Jerilderie Demons are of to join their neighbours in the Picola & District League, leaving CDHBU, Billabong Crows, Rennie Hoppers and Coleambally Blues hopefully obtaining admission to the nearby Hume Football League.

End of an Era

RIP: Coreen and District Football Netball League 1909 to 2007

Today marks the end of one of the longest running Football Leagues in Country Victoria and New South Wales, 98 years strong 1909 to 2007.

The Coreen League with its origins around Corowa in New South Wales bids farewell today at Rennie Football Ground. Todays grandfinal we see 2 amalgamated clubs which comprises 6 former power houses and two of the foundation clubs of the league.

CDHBU Saints better known as Coreen, Daysdale, Hopefield Buraja United Saints will take on Billabong Crows better known as Urana and Oaklands.

Coreen and Daysdale originally merged to form the Saints in 1996. Hopefield and Buraja merged in 1948. Then these two clubs amalgamated in 2006.

Urana and Oaklands merged in 2005.

All these clubs have won a total of 42 flags and one of the merged teams will make it 43.

RiverinAFL will be attending the game in respect for what the league has done for football and netball in the region and how it showed the community spirit will ensure the fight to survive lasts as long as humanly possible.

WHERE - SUNDAY, 19TH AUGUST, 2007 at three quarter time in the Reserves before the Ganmain - Grong Grong - Matong Lions take on the Wagga Tigers match at Ganmain Oval. The book will be launched by the legendary Tom Hafey who applied unsuccessfully for the Ganmain coaching position for the 1960 season. Tom will get his chance to finally coach Ganmain GG-M on this day after 47 years and a long and successful coaching career. Many former players will be at the launch and everyone is welcome including past players and supporters.

# Books will also be available at Ganmain Show on Saturday 18th August, 2007.

Record Crowd at Narrandera sees Swans & Pies

A record crowd filed into Narrandera Sports Ground friday night to witness the NAB Challenge game between Swans and Pies. The official attendance was given as 10,979 but with a AFL Members and children admitted free the crowd would have been in the vacinity of 12,500.

Sydney and Collingwood to play at Narrandera

Sydney Swans and Collingwood will contest the NAB Regional Challenge match under lights at Narrandera Sportsground on Friday 9th March at 7pm. Admission charges are noted below. No cars can enter the ground. The Showground will be openned for parking.

Organisers are now expecting a massive crowd to attend. Predictions between 8 and 10,000 people. The ground record for an AFL match was set way back in 1959 when 12,000 people attended the South West District League Grandfinal.

The ground record was set in 1962 when over 14,000 people packed the ground for the Group 20 Rugby League Grandfinal.

Given fine weather and the huge following of both clubs could push the AFL record.
Sydney and Collingwood have advised the media that they will be sending a full strenth teams to Narrandera.

Adult Admission $14.00 ea
Children (under 14) $2.00 ea
Student/Pensioners $8.00 ea
Family tickets (2 x Adults and 2 x Children) $28.00
There are also a limited number of Grandstand Tickets available at $5.00ea.

On March 9, 2007 the Australia Football League (AFL) comes to Narrandera Sportsground Underlights commencing 7pm. At this stage the competing teams have not been decided but one maybe local recruiting club Sydney Swans.

Interesting ground conditions

The ground was a slippery mud surface with some grass hanging on for dear life. The ball had its own bounce and players slipped all over the ground. Fortunately at time of writing there were no serious injuries.

Legends arrive in vintage cars

In front of a record home and away crowd of around 1,000 fans at Matong Sportsground, Grong Grong Matong Magpies defeated Narrandera Imperials 21.22.144 to 11.5.71. The huge crowd welcomed past Grong Grong Matong Magpie players arrive in a cavalcade of vintage cars. Narrandera also helped out with celebrations by wearing its original Imperials jumper.

On the 31st August, 1980, the Grong Grong Matong Football Club played their last game on the Matong Sports Ground. Now 26 years later, they are bringing the ground back to life for one more bash and the Magpies will fly again.

It's all happening next weekend and Matong will certainly come to life again. The festivities will begin on Friday night when all involved will meet and greet at the Matong Hotel. On Saturday the match against Narrandera will be staged at Matong Sports Ground. A highlight of the day will be the presentation of the specially made Magpie Heritage Guernseys to current GGGM players by former players of the last Grong Grong Matong team.

The last GG-M coach was Peter Cerato and he will be there for the occasion. Other players from that side include Mick Walsh, Denis Walsh, Butch Conway, Laurie Gibson, Hugh Crawford, Ian Mattingly, Gary Choy and Warren Purcell. Another attraction will be a cavalcade of Magpie Legends - past players and officials - in classic cars at half time of the reserves.

The festivities will continue on Saturday night with a Black and White Ball at Matong Hall. The weekend of celebration will conclude on Sunday with the Junior footy, Ganmain v Narrandera followed by a recovery BBQ at Matong Hotel. The organizing committee would love every player and supporter, friends and families to attend this special occasion.

A tremendous amount of preparation has gone into this weekend and I know that it will be a roaring success.

Ganmain Grong Grong Matong is trying something different with a game at Matong playing Narrandera on 1st July with the Lions donning the old GGM black and white striped jumpers.

The Ganmain-Grong Grong Matong Football Club will be staging a heritage game at Matong on 1st July when they are drawn to play Narrandera. They are calling it the Dennis Trading Heritage Game. The GGGM players will be wearing specially made magpie heritage guernseys. There will be activities on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and I will give more information in the coming weeks.
